Three die in Christmas morning fire in Amelia’s Ward, Linden

The Christmas holidays in the mining town of Linden have been dampened by a tragic Christmas morning fire that has claimed the lives of a Linden nurse and her two young nieces.

The dead woman has been identified as Zoella Kezia Lawrence. The names of the two young children are still to be confirmed. However, one is believed to be 15-years-old, while the other child is much younger.

The bodies were found close to each other at the backdoor of the house, suggesting that the three were trying to get out of the building, when they collapsed and died. The bodies were not burnt, suggesting that the three fire victims all died from smoke inhalation.

Workmates said the nurse headed home late on Christmas eve night after completing her shift at the Linden Hospital. Her young baby was left in the care of another relative, and she had planned to pick the baby up this morning.

The two nieces, who died in the blaze, traveled to Linden from Georgetown to spend Christmas with the aunt and other relatives. Family members are in disbelief.

The Fire Service was summoned to the blaze at around 2 o’clock this morning, and managed to quickly douse it, but most of the inside of the building was already gutted.

Police and Fire investigators suspect that the fire might have been electrical in origin.

Investigators are continuing their probe.
