Family of missing fishermen remain hopeful as hope continues to fade

It’s going to be a blue Christmas for the families of the four fishermen who have been missing at sea for the past 34 days.

Although hope continues to fade and the search operations have been reduced, family members are still hoping for a miracle.

The missing fishermen, Hazrat Razack, Cicil Persaud, Vickram Singh and Worrin Yipsam, ventured out to sea to render assistance to another vessel in distress, but never made it to the vessel or back home.

The Coast Guard of the Guyana Defence Force initially led the search and rescue efforts, but the Maritime Administration Department has since taken over those operations.

The son of one of the missing fishermen, Dhanraj Persaud, told News Source today that while the Coast Guard search and rescue operations were concentrated within Guyana’s maritime space, the authorities have also reached out to Guyana’s counterparts in the Caribbean including Trinidad for assistance.

Persaud said he remains hopeful that his father and the other fishermen will be located soon.

“We are hoping for the best but we left everything in God’s hand and trust him. He is the man in charge of everything. We are hoping for best and praying,” Persaud told News Source.

The daughter of fisherman Hazratt Razack, Hazena Bahadur told News Source that the family remains optimistic that the men are safe.

“We are still hoping that they could come back,” she said in a brief telephone call.

Razack, Persaud and Singh are from the West Bank of Demerara (WBD) while Wipsam is from the East Bank of Demerara (EBD). They were last seen on November 16.

The Government through the Ministry of Agriculture has provided the families of the four fishermen with food hampers and a cash grant to assist them during this difficult time.
