Three Berbice men were arrested over the weekend after they were linked to the discovery of more than 100 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of a car.
According to a statement from CANU, its agents noticed the car parked on the public road at Springlands on Friday during an operation and no one claimed ownership.
A search of the car revealed the presence of more than 100 pounds of marijuana in the trunk.
The car and the marijuana were confiscated.
The following day, a 64-year-old man Stuart Hamer turned up at the Police station claiming ownership of the car. He said he was hired by two men to transaport the illegal cargo to the Corentyne area.
Hamer identified the other two men, Jeremiah Smith and Damion Hinds, leading to their arrests.
The three have since been booked on marijuana trafficking charges.
CANU has noted an upsurge in the efforts to traffic marijuana in the Berbice area. Over the past few months, there have been several busts and a number of arrests.
