Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud officially went off into retirement today, allowing for Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine to move up to the post of Acting Commissioner.
Ramnarine is not new to these responsibilities, having acted as Commissioner on several occasions in the past and more recently while Persaud enjoyed his pre-retirement leave.
During his farewell parade last week, Persaud declined to say whether he would recommend Ramnarine for the post of Commissioner, making it clear that it was not his call to make.
Although Persaud did not hand over the symbolic mantel to a successor during his farewell parade, he wished that person and the top management of the force the best for the future.
It is no secret that Persaud and Ramnarine shared a strained relationship with officers in the Guyana Police Force.
It is the President who will ultimately appoint the new Commissioner of Police after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.
The life of the last Commission expired several months ago but Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said on Monday that there are some names being reviewed and a new Commission should be in place soon.
Responding to calls for the post of Police Commissioner to be advertised, Ramjattan said there is a process under the Constitution that should be followed for the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police.
Ramjattan said already he has asked Ramnarine to address the spate of robberies committed on persons after leaving the banks.
The Minister said he was very concerned and a sting operation will likely be set up to address the issue.
He hastened to add, however, that such an operation will depend on the sharing of information from the public.
