Sections of the LGBT community in Guyana were thrown into a state of despair on Sunday evening over the death of a male – to – female transgender in her early 20s.
According to close friends, Desmond Lyken aka ‘Desiree’ was pronounced dead by doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital after ingesting a poisonous substance on Saturday.
Friends have since claimed that she opted to take her own life when gripped with frustration of her already abusive relationship. Reports state that Desiree worked as commercial sex worker but outside of that she was involved in a serious relationship with a young man who has only been identified as Denzil.
She had reportedly been made to endure a series of intimate partner violence at the hands of this young man which resulted in her suffering a broken hand recently.
Her partner’s refusal to continue the relationship and move on with another individual reportedly sent the Desiree into a state of depression.
Her Facebok posts over the last two weeks pointed to her depressed state of mind.
On November 26 she wrote “Hi Facebook I’m happy to b with you for today but I’m sad. Good bye for good. My boyfriend is a good boy… I love him but [why] he had to go and do dis.” Several friends tried to reach out to her after the post.
