Trini born, Canadian citizen remanded on drug trafficking charge

58-year-old Trinidadian born, Canadian citizen Edward James was remanded to prison on Wednesday when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was charged with trafficking narcotics.

According to the Prosecution’s case, Edward James on Tuesday 7th January, 2014 was busted at the Cheddi Jagan airport with close to 20 pounds of cocaine stashed in the false bottom of his two suitcases. The man was an outgoing passenger on a Caribbean Airlines flight to Toronto, Canada. Reports state that he was an in-transit passenger at the Cheddi Jagan airport.

During his appearance in court, the Magistrate was told that this was the man’s first visit to Guyana. It was also reported that he was suffering from a number of medical issues and ought to be granted bail.

Bail was refused and the man will make his next court appearance on January 13, 2014.
