It was chaos along the East Bank Demerara corridor Wednesday evening as a truck carrying fuel burst into flames at the Two Brothers Gas Station at Eccles. Quick action by the fire service prevented the fire from spreading to fuel lines at the gas station, however another truck was damaged.
Many persons living close by bolted from their homes as they worried about the fire engulfing the entire fuel station. Traffic was brought to an almost standstill as the police were brought up to divert traffic and allow the fire service to get the job done.
The Guyana Fire Service came in for high praises at the end of the night for successfully averting what could have been a major disaster.
The Fire Service fought the raging blaze which started at about 6:20 pm, by using a special type of foam that left onlookers puzzled and asking questions.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle would not reveal details in relation to the procedure deployed. “Just like how the army wouldn’t tell you about its weapons, I can’t tell you about this,” he said when approached by the media.
No one was hurt during the ordeal. One woman could be heard recounting that the fire was first spotted coming from one of the two fuel trucks. “It was like the truck burst into flames,” the traumatized woman said.
The fire service and police were immediately alerted along with the Guyana Power and Light Company.
While the fire was subdued within minutes, the chaos continued along the roadway as traffic scuttled on in opposite directions.
By this time, the police had lined the roadway in neighboring Agricola and Mc Doom to direct traffic and provide safety to persons who disembarked their vehicles and walked along the roadside. (Kurt Campbell)
