Two CANU security guards charged with stealing cocaine

Two security guards attached to the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit who were tasked with keeping an eye on cocaine that was seized by CANU agents, appeared in court on Wednesday charged with stealing some of the cocaine evidence.

The two men, Theon Ambrose and Kevin Dickie appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry and were granted $350,000 bail after the charges were read to them.

The Prosecution’s case is that while on duty on April 16, 2015, the two conspired and carted off eight packets of cocaine that was seized by CANU agents during an operation in the Diamond community.

The cocaine was reportedly stored in a freezer because it was found in seafood. The men were caught on camera walking to the freezer and one of them was later seen leaving the compound with a bag which reportedly contained the stolen cocaine. The two will return to court on May 7 for the matter to continue.

There has always been concern about the way evidence is secured at law enforcement agencies across Guyana. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
