US prepared to stand with Guyana against any forms of aggression from Venezuela -assures Ambassador Theriot

The United States is paying keen attention to Guyana’s case against Venezuela that remains before the International Court of Justice, and remains prepared to stand with Guyana against Venezuela’s aggression.

Speaking during an appearance on the “SOURCES” programme on Sunday, the US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, said while discussions with Venezuela on its claims to Guyana’s territory have not commenced, Washington is planning to raise the issue, while being mindful of the current process ongoing before the International Court of Justice.

“That is definitely in the discussion that we plan to have, we are not there yet, I think what is really important is that we wait on the ICJ to make a decision because then that puts to bed the issue of the land borders, we all know how that is going to turn out, I mean it’s obvious, 100% in Guyana’s favor so as soon as that happen, that will trigger our ability to assist on maritime border. Your EEZ is what it is and we will continue to help you to defend that and but I think having it settled will be comforting to everyone especially Guyana,” the Ambassador said.

The Ambassador said the US is absolutely ready and willing to advance Guyana’s case and defend the country from any forms of aggression. She said the US remains clear in its support for Guyana.

“Obviously we stand by your side against threats from Venezuela, luckily those have calmed a bit since our January 03rd operations there but we continue to be vigilant and should you need our help we are here.  One of the things that we have discussed that will be credible for your domain awareness whether maritime or air is we are going to collaborate on drone technology,” the Ambassador noted.

Further, the Ambassador said the US will continue to work with Guyana on Defence matters and expand training to boost the country’s capabilities.

“You all are part of our coalition, the Shield of the Americas and together we are going to work with Guyana and the eleven signatories to that coalition to counter transitional crime, to address these narco traffickers that are just a scourge on all of our societies and continue of course to defend the sovereignty of Guyana,” Ambassador Theriott stated.

The US has long backed Guyana in the controversy against Venezuela, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio issuing a stern warning against Venezuela, saying that it will be a sad day for Caracas should Venezuela ever attempt to invade Guyana.

Earlier this year, the US carried out an early morning operation in Venezuela that saw the country’s President and his wife being captured and flown to the US to face narco trafficking charges.
