Convicted Guyanese drug lord, Shaheed Roger Khan, is scheduled to be released from a US prison in July of this year, on the completion of his 10 year jail sentence for narco trafficking and conspiracy.
Khan was slapped with the prison sentence after he opted to take a plea deal rather than face a trial.
The terms of that plea deal are not known, but it is likely that he will be deported to Guyana when released. He could face a laundry list of criminal charges on his return to Guyana.
In preparation of that release and deportation, the US Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch has revealed that Guyana and US authorities are working together to prepare for his return to Guyana.
During a radio interview on 94.1, the Ambassador said “we are working very closely with the Guyanese authorities on making sure that the arrival is as smooth as possible and so the best thing we can do is continue to collaborate and share information and work together”, Ambassador Lynch said.
Roger Khan recently filed a petition with a US Court seeking an early release. The matter is still to be heard.
The convicted drug pusher before his arrest in Suriname and extradition from Trinidad and Tobago, had admitted to leading a death squad enterprise in Guyana that is believed to be responsible for the murders of several persons and the execution of suspected criminals.
He also admitted that he offered security support to the then PPP civic government.
For several years, Khan was seen as the leader of the drug trafficking underworld in Guyana.
Two years ago, the US Drug Enforcement Agency opened a Guyana office, which is located in the US Embassy. The new US Ambassador said the DEA has been working along well with its local counterparts and continues to have successes in the local drug fight.
She said the work and collaboration will continue.
