Vendors and shoppers in Stabroek Square urged to desist from littering as clean-up exercise is undertaken

Vendors outside the Stabroek Market were temporarily removed today as the Georgetown City Council launched a clean-up exercise at the market and its surrounding areas.

The area was not cleaned for months as many of the vendors who were allowed to use the area temporarily, built permanent structures.  Many of those structures were removed today to allow access to the cleaning crews.

Mayor of Georgetown Ubraj Narine was on hand to observe the cleaning operation. He said for too long the Market has been in chaos and it’s time to fix it and bring some much needed order to the area.

“The Vendors will continue to operate in a manner that is clean, neat and organized. We must put some kind of system in place. I don’t believe that we should only have a clean-up exercise for one and two days. We should put systems in place and when we put systems in place, we will be able to regularize those vendors” Mayor Narine said.

Mayor Narine also said that while the move is one that is commended at this time, there is need for street vendors to be properly accommodated in the future and that will only come if the MCC and Central Government work together.

“If we work together, as a team with central government and the mayor and city council, we need to get a proper place for these vendors to operate and we cannot continue to crucify and chastised vendors. Vendors they have a role to play as well. You want to move them out you want to get of them. What will they do to provide for their children”, the Mayor queried.

He said vending remains the backbone of the economy, but it must be done in an orderly fashion.

Just recently the Police indicated that they will dispatch additional security to the area following a warning from the US embassy about the high level of crime in the Stabroek market area.
