VIP cocaine couple remanded to prison on drug charges

A Guyanese man and his pregnant Canadian wife were remanded to prison on Monday after they were both slapped with drug trafficking charges. The charges resulted from a cocaine bust that took place at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Friday.

The two, Mahendra Ramsuchit and Rohbina Basdeoram, were not required to enter a plea as they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. They will make their next court appearance on 13th February, 2015.

The couple was arrested on Friday after just over 40 pounds of cocaine was discovered in their suitcases as they were getting ready to board a flight to Toronto, Canada.

They were both sitting in the VIP area of the airport and were called out for further examination after it was realised that their VIP letter from a government office was bogus.

Police investigators are still searching for the former Personal Assistant to the Junior Agriculture Minister who presented the forged letter to the airport and got the couple full access to the Vip lounge.

The man has not been seen since the bust was made.

Investigators have since found out that although he left the job at the Agriculture Ministry more than six months ago, he continued carrying protocol duties at the airport and would get various passengers Vip treatment and access to the Vip lounge. Investigations are ongoing.
