West Coast Demerara man dies after running into burning building in search of grandson

A Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara man who went back into his burning house to rescue a grandson, perished in a Sunday afternoon fire that has left his community in disbelief.

The dead man has been identified as Rajendra Mohabir aka Slowie.

According to eyewitnesses, fire engulfed the 7th Street, Windsor Forest house just before 2pm on Sunday following a power outage in the area.

The property also housed a small church and a grocery shop. It is suspected that the fire was electrical in origin and might have started in the shop. Persons said there was low voltage and a power outage in the area, and just after the return of power, a loud explosion was heard in the shop.

The family raised an alarm and evacuated the building quickly, but Mohabir ran back into the burning property, believing that a grandson was still in the building. The child was not in the building and the man reportedly got trapped in the smoke filled building as the fire quickly spread.

His charred remains were discovered as firefighters went through the debris after the fire was eventually put out.

Devastated family members and friends cried out at the scene of the blaze. A full investigation has been launched.
