Police investigators have arrested the ex-husband of a West Demerara woman for her murder.
The businessman, Ryan Sugrim, who operates a gas station in the Crane area, was reportedly taken into custody to be questioned about his ex-wife’s disappearance.
Police sources have revealed that the man led investigators to an area behind a gas station, where the woman’s body was found in a shallow grave.
The woman, 37-year-old Zaila Sugrim, was last seen on Saturday when she left her home to meet with the ex-husband.
She was last seen going into his car.
Family members have since explained that she was always fearful of him, but Saturday was her son’s birthday and since the son lived with him and his family, she wanted to visit the young boy.
A relative said she felt safe going with him on that day because his entire family was expected to be at home.
The woman never returned to her home and her family members filed a report over the weekend. They told investigators that they feared the jilted ex-lover might have done something to the woman.
Their worst fears became reality today when the information was received of the woman’s body being found.
The couple broke up sometime last year after the husband became very abusive. He was charged back in December with wrongfully restraining the woman and causing grievous bodily harm. However, he was granted bail by the Court. The woman moved out of their home just after.
At the murder scene this afternoon, a large crowd gathered with family members wailing uncontrollably.
Crime Scene investigators spent more than an hour at the scene before removing the partly decomposed body.
A post-mortem examination is to be conducted soon.
