Police and Army troops early Sunday morning began a journey to the Kaieteur Falls to retrieve a body that was spotted last evening by Park Rangers.
The discovery comes almost two weeks after a female Tourist went missing during a visit to the falls.
While authorities remain unsure whether the body is that of the missing tourist, Governance Minister Raphael Trotman told News Source on Sunday that from all indications it appears to be her. No other person has been reported missing in the area.
He said the body was spotted in the Kaieteur Gorge, an area that was reportedly searched extensively for the woman before the search was called off last week.
Trotman said the police’s presence is important since the cause of death is yet to be determined while the army will help with accessing the rough terrain and removing the body.
He could not say when this is expected to be completed.
After keeping the Kaieteur National Park closed for more than week, the Department of the Environment made a decision to reopen the Park on Wednesday last.
The woman was among a group of tourists visiting the park when she disappeared from among the group. The other tourists said the woman had complained about being depressed and cried during the trip. She reportedly told the others in the group that she was having problems in her love life.
