After being stranded in the United States for over two months because of the coronavirus pandemic, the first group of Guyanese nationals to be repatriated arrived at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Saturday afternoon on an Eastern Airlines flight from Miami.

They were greeted upon their arrival by health officials and were sanitized upon leaving the aircraft.

One hundred and thirty seven persons arrived on the flight and expressed relief to be home.

84-year-old John Quail said he is excited to be back in his homeland, noting that “this is the best country in the world! There is no place like home. It is so nice to be back home and to see nice welcoming faces”.

He said he was stranded in Miami for three months and will follow all of the instructions of the Health Authorities now that he is back home in Guyana.

Another passenger Sherida Sattaur, said she intends to remain home for seven days as is required by the Health Authorities. She too expressed her relief to be back in Guyana.

All of the Guyanese who arrived on the flight would have tested negative for the coronavirus. They had to submit themselves for a test and provide the results to the local authorities before coming home.

Under the repatriation guidelines, all returning nationals are required to home quarantine for seven days and to follow the necessary public health guidelines as dictated by the National COVID-19 Task Force.

There are more than 500 Guyanese nationals still to return home from different countries. The authorities have indicated that the repatriation flights will be done twice per week and the returning citizens will have to stand the cost of the flight home.

The Public Health Minister and the Director of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority were among the officials at the airport to overlook the first repatriation flight.
