In a statement, Sir Shridath said the "elections crisis" in Guyana is now nearing its tipping point and as citizens of Guyana, "we owe it to ourselves, to the Caribbean Community which we have helped to bring to life, and to the wider global community whose respect we have earned as an enlightened democratic State – not to debase ourselves by descent into the pit of lawlessness."

Respected statesman and former Guyanese diplomat, Sir Shridath Ramphal has made an appeal for citizens of Guyana not to descent into darkness of denial of rule of law and regularity as the election recount process nears an end.

In a statement, Sir Shridath said the “elections crisis” in Guyana is now nearing its tipping point and as citizens of Guyana, “we owe it to ourselves, to the Caribbean Community which we have helped to bring to life, and to the wider global community whose respect we have earned as an enlightened democratic State – not to debase ourselves by descent into the pit of lawlessness.”

He called for lawfulness to prevail across the country, noting that if it doesn’t, all of Guyana and its people are imperilled.

The former Attorney General and former Foreign Minister of Guyana reminded that in a matter of weeks, Guyana will be appearing before the International Court of Justice against Venezuela’s “menace to our national patrimony”.

He said almost three-quarters of Guyana – of land and sea – is under threat and the country must be protected with clean and united hands.

Sir Shridath Ramphal is heading the Guyana team that will appear before the International Court of Justice.
