President and VP offer condolences on passing of former TT Prime Minister

President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo have joined other regional leaders in offering condolences to the people of Trinidad and Tobago on the passing of former Trinidadian Prime Minister, Basdeo Panday.

Mr. Panday, who was 90-years-old, passed away on New Year’s Day, according to a message from his family. Panday, who served as Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1995 to 2001, also served as Leader of the Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago for several years.

He last visited Guyana last year.

Both President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo offered their condolences in separate messages last evening.

In his message, Vice President Jagdeo remembered Basdeo Panday as a lawyer, politician, trade unionist, economist, actor, and former civil servant.

Mr. Jagdeo said he hopes that Panday’s legacy will be a source of comfort, and cherished memories for his family and the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
