President promises to get to bottom of deadly terror attack at gas station

President Irfaan Ali has promised to get to the bottom of the recent bombing at the Mobil gas station on Regent Street that claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl. He said the incident was a vile attack on the country to create fear and harm.

The Guyana Police Force arrested the main suspect along with eight others, who all remain in custody.

The main suspect is a Venezuelan national.

Addressing the Guyana Defence Force’s 60th anniversary church service on Saturday , the President said the attack was nothing short of terrorism.

“That cowardly act, which claim the life of an innocent child was a vile assault on the people and an attempt to create harm and fear. Our nation mourn with the family of the young life loss. This attack bore all the hallmarks of terrorism, it was an attempt to sow fear and chaos, to destabilize and create tension and we will get to the bottom of it,” the President promised.

The President said the country’s law enforcement authorities are now on standby to respond to any similar threats and will respond with the firmness such threats deserve.

“But let it be known here and now that we will not be intimidated, we will not bow, we will not be broken. I wish to commend the swift and coordinated response of our law enforcement authorities and the joint services including the Guyana Defence Force. The professionalism and response reminds us that in the face of evil, Guyana stands united and unshaken,” the President stated

He also said that the investigations will intensify and he promised that the motive behind the attack will be made known.

He said justice will be pursued relentlessly and he will take every lawful measure to protect citizens and deter those who may contemplate similar actions.

“We are going deep, broad and hard to bottom of this. To those who believe they can strike fear in the heart of Guyanese, I say this, you will fail. You will fail because the spirit of our people cannot be terrorized and because we are one nation resolute and invisible. You will fail because our law enforcement agencies will ensure that peace will prevail,” Mr. Ali said.

The President stated that the safety and security of the citizens are paramount and non-negotiable.

He said even as the country responds to the act, the country’s outrage must not lead to a path or prejudice or discrimination.

The main suspect and others are expected in Court this week.
