13-year-old Enmore boy found hanging

Police are investigating the death of a 13-year-old boy of Enmore, East Coast Demerara who was found hanging from the ceiling in his room early on Tuesday morning. Investigators believe the teen committed suicide.

The discovery was made by his grandmother who expressed shock at his passing and the way he took his life. Other relatives and friends said they know of no problem that the teen may have been going through at home or school.

The young man who has been identified as Rishi Ramkissoon was a 2nd form student of the Golden Grove Secondary School. His grandmother provided a statement to the police and investigators intend to visit his school to speak with his classmates.

Guyana continues to be faced with a major suicide problem. This country has the highest suicide rate in the region and health officials worry that more young people especially teenagers have been taking their own lives or making attempts. The Government has launched a programme to address the issue at the community level.
