PPP accuses President of being out of sync with reality over his criticism of GECOM Chairman nomination lists

In a statement last evening, the PPP said “while the President gives lip service to constitutional compliance, he continues to insist that there be satisfaction of a set of criteria laid down by him – all of which are extra and ultra vires Article 161 (2) of the Constitution. The President also falsely asserted that his ‘criteria was never challenged’. This is farthest from the truth. Immediately after these ‘criteria’ were made known, it was pointed out that they were unconstitutional”.

The Opposition, People’s Progressive Party, is not happy with recent statements from the President about the two lists of nominees that were submitted by the Opposition Leader to be considered for the Elections Commission Chairman position.

The President found those two lists to be unacceptable and the Opposition Leader has agreed to submit a third list.

The PPP, however, believes that the President may have insulted outstanding Guyanese, when he recently stated during his Public Interest television programme that even a blind man could see that the second list of names submitted by Jagdeo did not meet the criteria.

According to the PPP, the President “conveniently refuses to remind himself that he consented to his name being put on a similar list on two separate occasions, obviously, believing that he was qualified to be on those lists. However, by his own ‘criteria’, he would be swiftly disqualified”.

President Granger has said that the lists to be submitted to him ought to give him a wide choice for selection and he ought not be limited in his choice.

He said if a list is submitted and four out of the six nominees do not fit the criteria, then it would mean his choice is being limited.

The PPP believes the President may be out of sync with reality.
