President still studying latest GECOM Chairman nomination list

Three weeks after the Opposition Leader submitted his latest list of nominees for the GECOM Chairperson job, President David Ganger today said he is no closure to selecting the next Chairperson, but noted that the latest list is still being examined.

He noted that although the list was submitted to him weeks ago, the Opposition Leader took more than eight weeks to compile and submit the list.

“I am not any closer to naming somebody as yet. I have looked at all lists very carefully and I think Mr. Jagdeo took 10 weeks to submit the list so I’m exercising due diligence,” Granger said on the sidelines of an event on Thursday.

He added that “I have not received any further advice from my colleagues or Cabinet Ministers. As you know, this has taken the better part of the year, over eight months and I’m very anxious to bring it to a successful conclusion,” he added.

The President said he is very conscious of the ruling of the Chief Justice which he intends to adhere to. He said the ruling never changed his obligation to ensure that the person chosen is fit and proper.

The President said he remains open to consultation and even if this list is rejected it does not mark the end of the road.

Two previous lists were rejected by the President, where he noted that the nominees did not meet the criteria to fill the top GECOM post.
