A young man in Sophia brought an end to years of abuse that his mother suffered at the hands of her common law husband when he slit the man’s throat during another argument.

The dead man has been identified as Lance McDonald. Reports indicate that McDonald and his common law wife were having an argument and he began being abusive to the woman when her son decided to get involved and a confrontation began between the two men. The youth armed himself with a cutlass and chopped his step dad across the neck. The man died on the spot.

The suspect has been taken into custody.

Persons in the area said the woman would complain often about being badly beaten by the man and the abuse has reportedly been going on for over 10 years.

Another son and a number of persons are believed to have witnessed the murder. An investigation is underway.
