Police Constable drowns in Potaro river mishap during joint services operation

A young Police Special Constable who was part of a Joint Services and Guyana Geology and Mines operation died on Friday in a river mishap in the Potaro river.

Twenty-two year old Akeem Hyles drowned as the boat capsized in the Amatuk Falls area throwing the entire team overboard. It is unclear whether the young constable was wearing a life jacket at the time.

His body was recovered and arrangements are being made to bring the body back to Georgetown.

The young man departed the Ogle Airport this morning along other ranks who were dispatched to assist the GGMC officials in dealing with illegal mining that was being carried out in the Kaieteur National Park area.

It was not the first time that he had been sent to the interior locations to tackle illegal mining. He had made several previous trips.  He is originally from the Berbice area.

The Guyana Police Force is extending sincere condolences to the parents, relatives and all the friends of Special Constable Akeem Hyles.
