A 35 -year-old father of four was on Thursday afternoon charged and remanded to prison for the violent attack and robbery of a visiting retired British soldier earlier this week.

The man, José Barker of Charlestown, Georgetown made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty to the robbery with violence charge.

It is alleged that he robbed Edward John Constant of one gold chain valued at $180,000. The chain belong to the retired soldier’s deceased wife and has not been recovered.

Barker was represented by Attorney-at-Law Adam Thompson who also insisted on his client’s innocence and made an application for bail before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Objection was raised to the bail application by the prosecution who also claimed that Barker was positively identified by the elderly victim and other eyewitnesses.

He will make his next court appearance on June 16.

Constant who attempted to put up a fight during the Monday morning attack was present in Court as the matter was called before the Magistrate. He was robbed on May 30 while sight – seeing at the Stabroek Market area having returned to Guyana to be part of the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
