New Courtyard by Marriott Hotel opens next door to Cheddi Jagan International Airport

The US$20 Million Courtyard by Mariott Hotel was officially opened today just a stone’s throw away from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

It is the first international hotel to be constructed near to the Airport.

The new 150-room hotel is expected meet the growing demand for accommodation in the country, but will specifically target airline crew members, business travelers, diplomats, and in-transit passengers.

The hotel which was developed by Cardinal Investments Incorporated, headed by CEO Roy Bassoo, has five executive suites in addition to its 150 rooms. Once fully operational, it is expected to have a staff compliment of 200.

At the opening today, CEO Roy Bassoo said the hotel’s opening is testament to all that can be achieved when local and international companies work together.

“This venture highlights what is possible when foreign and local expertise merge, its class and steel rise with purpose reflecting not just sunlight but an ambition of a nation eager to greet the world. This milestone is far more than a strategic investment in our hospitality and tourism sector, it is a beacon illuminating Guyana’s international promise and our flourishing economy,” Mr Bassoo, said.

Mr. Bassoo also announced plans to build another international hotel along the Heroes Highway on the East Bank of Demerara. He said construction for that project is expected to start early next year.

Meanwhile, President Irfaan Ali hailed the venture and said with its opening, Guyana is ready to take its place and become a transit hub in the region.

He also described the investment as a demonstration of confidence in the country’s economy.

“This investment is not an isolated act, it is part of larger, deliberate, strategic plan. By the end of this year, Guyana will boast more than 2,000 world-class hotel rooms. We are not building hotels for the sake of hotels, we are building capacity. We are not just lifting ceiling, we are lifting standards. To accompany all these investments, in the next term, we will build a world-class indoor arena, where we will be able to host international events of every scale and magnitude,” the President said.

He said with Guyana becoming a major tourist destination, investments like the new Courtyard by Marriott Hotel will be welcomed.

“But we also have another ambition, it is an ambition that is bold, that is forward looking and that is absolutely achievable,. That ambition is make Guyana a major transit hub for international passengers traveling between Africa, the Caribbean, South America, Central America and North America,” the President noted.

The hotel was built under a US$20 million Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2021 between the Government and Cardinal Investments Inc., with financing support led by Republic Bank.

The main contractor was Bassoo Building and Civil Engineering Contractors, with engineering support from Qing Jian Group Company.
