Government remains opposed to Mohamed becoming Opposition Leader -says AG Nandlall

Attorney General Anil Nandlall has made it clear that the governing People’s Progressive Party does not support WIN party leader Azruddin Mohamed being elected as the country’s Leader of the Opposition.

On his “Issues in the News” programme on Tuesday night, Mr. Nandlall said Mohamed’s elevation to that post with pending legal troubles would be historic for Guyana for the “wrong reasons”.

The Speaker of the National Assembly has set next Monday for the meeting of all Opposition Members of Parliament for the election of the Opposition Leader. With the WIN party holding the majority of seats on the Opposition side, its Leader, Azruddin Mohamed is likely to become the Opposition Leader.

Although the election of the Opposition Leader does not need or require Government support, Mr. Nandlall said it must be recorded that the PPP stands opposed to Mr. Mohamed’s impending election while facing extradition.

“We are making history for the wrong reason, and the People’s Progressive Party, is proud to say that it has oppose and it stands in Opposition to such a person being elevated to that high post. The PPP/C will be vindicated and will be absolved by history for the position it has taken on this matter. History has always recorded our position on these matters we are always on the right side of the law,” the Attorney General stated.

According to Mr. Nandlall, the country’s Parliament will be permanently stained should an OFAC sanctioned individual rise to the high office of Opposition Leader.

“It is an indictment on our country and it is an indictment on the English speaking Caribbean for a OFAC sanctioned person and a fugitive offender, a person who is indicted by a jury in the United States of America of a number of international financial crime and whose extradition is being sought by the Government of the United States of America, maybe the leader of the Opposition of our country, that is an indictment on Guyana an indictment on our Parliamentary system, on the constitution of our country and indictment on governance in the English speaking Caribbean,” Mr. Nandlall said during his broadcast.

The WIN party, has already made it clear that its leader, Azruddin Mohamed will be the nominee for the Opposition Leader’s position.

Mr. Nandlall though, believes that Guyana does not yet know what impact or consequences it stands to face, if Mr. Mohamed is elected to that post.

“I am not oblivious to the fact that he was elected, we didn’t elect him and we do not support a person who is so circumstanced being in the Parliament and being in that post,” the Attorney General said.

The Speaker had been refusing to set a date for the election of the Opposition, but with mounting pressure from the Opposition and the Diplomatic community, he announced the date for the election last evening in a statement to the nation.
