Investigation still ongoing into death of crew members aboard cargo vessel at city wharf; Families demand transparency

More than four months after four crew members of a cargo vessel died tragically in the engine room of the vessel at a city wharf, the investigation into their deaths remains open.

Minister of Labour, Keoma Griffith confirmed to News Source that the investigations from the Labour Department are ongoing. He said the investigators are still awaiting the results of a forensic analysis of the scene.

It is suspected that the four crew members of the vessel may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The four men were found in the engine room of the vessel on a lower section of the vessel. The discovery of the bodies was made on the evening of February 4, 2026.

They were identified as 18-year-old Brandon Deonarine, 57-year-old Nerwaine Persaud, 33-year-old Dominic Alexis and 25-year-old Getindra Sanchara.

Two of the dead men were seamen, while one was the captain of the vessel and the fourth man was an engineer.

Family members of the dead men have been complaining about the lack of information from officials about the investigations.

In a statement on social media, the daughter of Nerwaine Persaud who died in the tragedy said her family is still unable to turn the page on the tragic chapter in their lives.

The young woman, Veanjeie Persaud, said her family, along with the other grieving families affected by this tragedy, continues to wait for answers.

She explained that despite the passage of time, the families have received little to no meaningful update regarding the investigation.

It was explained that they are still to be provided with the toxicology results, and have not been given any clear information on the progress being made.

“While we understand that investigations can be lengthy and complex, four months is a significant amount of time for families to be left in uncertainty. We are not only grieving the loss of our loved ones, but we are also carrying the burden of unanswered questions”, Persaud said.

She said families affected deserve transparency, communication, and respect, and they also deserve to know what steps have been taken, what findings have been made, and when they can expect answers, adding that silence only deepens the pain and frustration that they have been facing over the past four months.

In a statement on the incident back in February, the Police explained that its preliminary investigations indicate that the men were inspecting a dry space within the engine room of the vessel when they were reportedly exposed to suspected noxious fumes and collapsed.

The Police said information received indicated that Brandon Deonarine and Nerwaine Persaud initially entered the engine room and subsequently collapsed.

After they collapsed, Dominic Alexis entered the engine room in an attempt to render assistance but also collapsed.

The Police said 25-year-old Getindra Sanchara was the last to enter the engine room in a further attempt to assist and he also collapsed in the room.

An alarm was raised by other crew members and Emergency Medical Technicians, along with the Guyana Fire Service, responded to the scene.
