Guyanese in Suriname encouraged to return home and be part of country’s development

Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, has urged Guyanese living in neighbouring Suriname to return home to contribute and play their part in Guyana’s new development.

Speaking during a job fair organized by the Government and Private Sector over the weekend in Nickerie Suriname, the Foreign  Secretary noted that there are a number of opportunities that are available in Guyana that all Guyanese can cash in on.

As a result he said, the Government has taken a decision to have Guyanese living in the diaspora be part of the Journey.

“What we are doing here today is unprecedented, what we are doing here is the first, we started in New York, we come here in Suriname and very soon we will be going to other parts of the Caribbean and even North America, because as we believe in every single Guyanese living in Guyana we also believe in every Guyanese living outside of Guyana and we want you to return and play apart and contribute to what is taking place in our country,” Persaud stated.

Persaud said the task of transforming the country is a task of every Guyanese irrespective of where they reside and he noted that the Government will be expanding the exercise to target more Guyanese in the Caribbean and North America.

“I want to underscore how important it is for every single Guyanese to put themselves and their hands and their entire commitment to the task of transforming our country and persons have asked why are going to the diaspora and we are doing that because we believe the diaspora not only posses wealth, experience but also that shared desire for us to build a country that is strong, resilient and prosperous,” Persaud noted.

The job fair also featured officials from the NIS, Passport office, General Registrar Office as well a number of private sector entities.

Mr. Persaud told the gathering that there should be no fear in returning home since the Government’s policies are inclusionary.

“We come here at a time and to have this exercise when the Guyana you knew when you left due to harsh conditions is totally  different, you will be amazed and excited at the transformation that is taking place and you will feel a sense of national pride at what is taking place in our country,” the Foreign Secretary said.

Persons were also briefed about resettling in Guyana and various training opportunities available to them.
