Man shot dead during robbery at Wedding celebration

A wedding reception at Canal #2 on Sunday night came to an early and sad end, as three armed bandits invaded the reception and shot one of the celebrants dead, while injuring another man during a robbery.

The murdered man has been identified as 40-year-old Natram Persaud.

A Police report stated that it was just before 9pm on Sunday as family and friends were celebrating the marriage of The Samsundars, that three masked invaded the venue, relieving one of the attendees of a gold hand band that was valued at $250,000.

The robbery victim, Manipaul Rambarhak, was sitting at the entrance to the yard where the reception was taking place, when the three men pounced on him, as one of them fired shots in the air.

As the bandits were making their escape, Rambarhak and his friend Natram Persaud, decided to chase after them.

A scuffle broke out between one of the bandits and the two men and a gunshot was heard. Persaud fell to the ground as the bandits escaped along the Canal # 2 access road.

Relatives rushed to the assistance of Manipaul Rambarhak and Natram Persaud, and it was observed that they were both shot.

The two were rushed for medical care. Persaud was pronounced dead at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, while Rambarhak was taken into emergency surgery at the Woodlands Hospital. His condition has been listed as critical.

A full investigation is underway.

“Detectives processed the scene and three .45mm spent shells were recovered. One on the bridge area and two at the entrance of the yard. Several CCTV cameras were seen affixed to the building where the wedding function was held, and these will be reviewed by detectives”, the Police statement said.
