Police Officers caught on camera beating Linden Businessman; Police Force claims officer was attacked first

The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation into an incident in the town of Linden involving a popular businessman, Hilton Lyle, and a group of Policemen in the compound of the Mackenzie Police station.

In a video recording of the incident, the businessman could be seen on the ground inside of the compound of the Mackenzie Police Station surrounded by Police Officers who were kicking and punching him. The businessman eventually regains his footing and could be seen pointing at a specific officer, while another officer was holding him back.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the businessman had attacked a Police Officer first after being ordered out of the station. The Police Force said the policeman’s colleagues rushed to his aid, when he was attacked.

“He was asked to leave the station, and it is alleged that while leaving, he assaulted one of the police ranks, causing other ranks present to come to his aid”, the Police statement said.

It was explained by the Police Force that the businessman was at the station to check on his deejay who had been detained by the Police for refusing to turn off his sound system at the businessman’s Tropical Reflections Bar early this morning. The businessman was ordered out of the station and reportedly got into an argument that led to the attack as he was leaving.

The Police Force said the businessman was eventually arrested after the incident, but both the businessman and the deejay were released on self-bail.

The video recording of the incident is to form part of the investigations by OPR.
