Policeman freed of murder charge related to shooting death of Quindon Bacchus

Police Lance Corporal Kristoff DeNobrega was today set free of the charge of murder related to the shooting death of 25-year-old Quindon Bacchus.

DeNobrega was accused of killing 25-year-old Quindon Bacchus in June 2022 during an unauthorized Police operation in the East Coast Demerara village of Haslingotn.

Today, the Policeman was set free of the murder charge after Justice Gino Persaud upheld a no-case submission by the Defence, on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence to prove the case.

As such, on the instruction of the Judge, the jury returned a not guilty verdict, and DeNobrega was acquitted of the charge.

Outside the court, DeNobrega declined to comment, but his Attorney, George Thomas praised the ruling.

“Mr. DeNobrega is now a freed man. We are happy for the result, and we are grateful for everything that has transpired so far. It is only unfortunate that he had to stand trial for such an offence. There was very little evidence to incriminate him in any form or fashion. But it has come to an end,” Thomas told reporter.

Quindon Bacchus, who was a father of one, was gunned down by the police on June 10, 2022.

The incident was first described as an undercover sting operation by the Guyana Police Force which led to a shootout with the deceased and members of the Guyana Police Force.

The police claimed that Mr Bacchus was making arrangements to sell an illegal firearm to an undercover officer, and that when the police revealed themselves to him, he ran and started firing gunshots at the police.

The police claimed that they subsequently returned fire hitting him and he succumbed to those injuries. However, investigations revealed that there was no authorized police operation in that area and no Police Commander was aware of any such operation.

In November, 2024, the Supreme Court awarded $24M to Bacchus’ family in a separate wrongful death case.
