While Guyana has recorded 10 new recoveries from the coronavirus in the past 24hrs, taking the total number of recoveries to 57, the country has also recorded two new cases.
The two new cases are from Region One and Region Seven and Health officials are worried about that development. Region One now has two confirmed cases of the coronavirus while Region Seven has a total of 7 cases.
Director of Primary Health Services, Dr. Ertensia Hamilton said there is concern about the growing numbers in the outlying regions.
She said “to date the total number of persons tested is 1329 with the total number of negative cases being 1202. We currently have 57 persons that have recovered, sixty (60) active cases in institutional isolation, 3 patients in the COVID-19 ICU and the number of COVID deaths remains at 10. The Ministry is very concerned with the increased cases seen in Regions 1 (Barima-Waini) and 7 (Cuyuni- Mazaruni). As of today Region 1, now has 2 confirmed cases in 2 of their subdistricts. Region 7 has a total of 7 cases. This is not good. My fellow Guyanese this is the situation that we were working so hard to prevent”.
Dr. Hamilton said that in areas where it was expected the transmission of the coronavirus would have slowed, it has been growing. Georgetown remains the epicenter of the pandemic in Guyana.
” You will see from the pattern that the expected results from the measures implemented that persons have not participated fully. Where it was expected that the transmission would have slowed, we are still having new cases every day”.
Dr. Hamilton said the Ministry of Public Health cannot be the only participant in this fight and everyone must be on board.
Mobile testing facilities will continue to be moved around the country in the efforts to get more tests done.
