Six years after being charged with the kidnapping and murder of East Coast Demerara businessman, Rajendra Singh, the four assailants were sentenced to 11 and a half years in jail.
The four convicts, Deonauth Katwaru, Tony Thomas, Micheal Lewis and Adony James appeared before Justice Navindra Singh and opted to enter guilty pleas to the lesser count of manslaughter. They were facing murder charges.
The businessman was kidnapped and murdered in April 2014. His body was found dumped in Le Repentir cemetery after his family failed to pay a $50 million ransom that was being requested.
The Prosecutor encouraged the Judge to hand down a stiff penalty because of the seriousness of the crime and it being a cowardly act.
It was explained that the businessman provided support for his family and the family was left without that support when he was murdered.
With all of that said, the Judge still handed down the lenient sentence of 11 and a half years in jail and also ordered that time be subtracted for the period that the men spent on remand.
The four convicts will now only spend an additional five years in jail.
