The Government intends to spend more than $191 Billion this year to further develop the country’s’ road and bridge network, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh said today.
During the presentation of the 2026 Budget, the Finance Minister laid out Government’s infrastructure plan which includes the construction of new highways, expansion of current ones and construction of new bridges.
He said there will be greater emphases on quality of works and safety.
For community roads alone, the Government is proposing to spend just over $40 billion.
“Mr. Speaker, for community roads alone, we spent $55.6B in 2025 and we have budgeted an additional $40.2B in 2026. For hinterland roads alone, we have spent $14.2B in 2025 and we have budgeted another $10B for hinterland roads alone in 2026,’ the finance minister noted.
The infrastructural project include the completion of the Linden to Lethem corridor inclusive of a bridge at the kurupukari crossing with onward road linkage to the new deep water port in Berbice.
The Minister noted that the old Demerara River bridge will be dismantles for the Timehri to Sandhills crossing and to connect Leguan and Wakenaam

“Mr. Speaker in 2026, key major projects include continuing the four-lane railway embankment from Sherif Street to Orange Nasau and onwards to Mahaica river bridge, for that project $6.1B is budgeted. The next phase of that project will extend the four-lane highway all the way to D’Edward, that is expected to commence in 2026,” the Finance Minister stated.
Further he said Government will continue the Ogle to Eccles Highway onwards to Providence and then to Diamond to provide additional access to the East Bank of Demerara, a further $13B is budgeted for that expansion.
“We will continue the Heroes Highway from Buzbee dam to Land of Canann to which $28.6B is budgeted, and this highway will of course go all the way to the Soesdyke to Linden Highway,” the Finance Minister noted.
Works will also continue on the Good Success to Timehri Road on the East Bank of Demerara, the Linden to Mabura Hill Road and the Palmyra to Moleson Creek road as well as the Linden to Lethem road.
