43-year-old man perishes in Port Mourant fire

A massive late night fire which ripped through two houses at Managers’ Quarters in Port Mourant, Berbice, has claimed the life of a 43-year-old man.

Investigators have identified the man who perished in the fire as Tookant Deokaarran, who lived in the house where the blaze started.

In a statement this morning, the Guyana Fire Service reported that it was alerted to the fire at 10:17 last night, and immediately responded with two Fire Tenders.

On arrival, the two buildings that were located in the same compound, were already engulfed in flames and heavy smoke, according to the Fire Service.

Firemen immediately went into action, and battled the blaze for over 45 minutes, eventually dousing it completely.

A search of the rubble unearthed the remains of the 43-year-old man, who died in the blaze.

Several other persons who escaped from the other house that was gutted, are now homeless.

An investigation has since been launched by the Fire Service, as a cause of the fire is still to be determined.

The Guyana Fire Service is reminding homeowners to equip their homes with smoke detectors and alarms as well as fire extinguishers.
