Man nabbed trying to smuggle marijuana into NA Prison in underwear

Police and Prison officials arrested a Corentyne man on Tuesday morning after he attempted to smuggle two grams of marijuana into the New Amsterdam prison in his underwear.

In a statement, the Prison Service said 29-year-old Safraaz Hoossein, was at the Prison on Tuesday to deliver personal items for his brother, who is an inmate at the jailhouse.

The Prison Service said officials at the prison noticed the visitor acting in an uneasy and “weird” manner, and decided to carry out a “strip search” of the man. The search unearthed the marijuana concealed in a cigarette packet and stashed in the man’s underwear.

Hoossein was immediately arrested after the Police were contacted. He is now facing drug trafficking charges.

The Guyana Prison Service has been stepping up its monitoring of visitors at the jailhouses across the country after several attempts in the past months by visitors to smuggle contraband items into the prisons.
