Prison authorities this afternoon arrested a Berbice woman after she attempted to smuggle small packets of marijuana into the New Amsterdam prison in tennis rolls.
29-year-old Hemwattie Charandeo was arrested and handed over to the Police and will likely face drug trafficking charges.
She was held while delivering items for a relative who is behind bars awaiting a murder trial.
According to the Prison Service, during an inspection of the items that the woman was delivering, the small plastic wrapped packages of marijuana were found stashed in the tennis rolls. The marijuana was removed and weighed. The total amount added up to 11 grams.
There have been various attempts at the prisons across the country to smuggle illegal items in. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, prison authorities have put a number of additional measures in place to safeguard the prisons and the prison population.
