The Rusal Bauxite Company and the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union have reached an agreement, ending the strike by workers and ensuring the resumption of work by the workers.
As part of the agreement hammered out today, the Rusal company will rehire the 61 workers who were fired by the company when they started a strike action just over a month ago.
As part of the agreement, the two sides have agreed that there will be no victimisation or change of conditions for the reinstated workers, there will also be no compensation for time not worked during the dispute and the return of the check-off system and the Berbice river will be cleared of the blockage that has prevented the shipment of bauxite.
Both parties have also further agreed to recognize the sovereignty, Constitution and Laws of Guyana and neither shall act in contravention of those laws. They have promised to uphold the spirit and goodwill to which the Terms of Resumption were negotiated and signed and will do nothing to circumvent those terms.
The two sides have indicated that a subsequent meeting will be held within fourteen (14) days following the full resumption of work and the Guyana Bauxite & General Workers Union (GB&GWU) and the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (BCGI) shall commence negotiation of a new Collective Labour Agreement (CLA).
The parties have agreed that in the pursuit of a new Collective Labour Agreement and in the Avoidance and Settlement of Disputes, the procedure used for dealing with same in the old (former) CLA shall be utilised as an interim measure.
They have also agreed that all major issues which involve conditions of employment shall be addressed with a view to achieving resolution.
