The health worker said doctors and nurses are drained as the hospital overflows with cases and they find themselves dealing with various emergencies with the hospitalised patients all day.

Active COVID-19 cases surge to over 2000 as Delta variant spreads

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the country has surged past 2000 with all 10 regions seeing increased cases as the Delta variant of the virus spreads.

The Health Ministry is particularly worried by the situation in Regions 3 and 4, which account for more than 80% of the active cases.

In Region 4, the capital of Georgetown along with Diamond and Grove on the East Bank and Better Hope and Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara remain the hotspots. In Region 3, the village of Tuschen is the main area of concern with growing numbers.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony is encouraging citizens to take all the precautions necessary to protect themselves from the faster-spreading variant of the virus.

“Because of this variant. is more transmissible, people coming into contact with someone who is infected with this variant if they are not protected if they are not keeping their distance and if they are not wearing masks, they can become infected so people need to take these precautions seriously”, Dr. Anthony said.

The number of COVID-19 cases has been climbing steadily in the past weeks with over 1200 new cases recorded in the past 7 days alone.

Already, officials at the COVID Hospital are worried about the growing number of cases and hospitalizations.
