The Alliance For Change (AFC) is warning that Nomination Day could descend into chaos and confusion if the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) fails to clearly outline the procedure for the presentation of the Lists of Candidates by the political parties on Monday.
The presentation will be done at the Umana Yana between 10:00hrs and 14:00hrs.
At a press conference today, Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, said outside of the time and the location, no additional information has been provided by GECOM.
He said a letter from the AFC to GECOM seeking clarification and information has been met with silence.
“If GECOM does not establish and publish what the procedures are, then the assumption is the person who gets there first is the person who is going to be registered as the first political party to hand in the List of Candidates. Now therein lies the problem because if you don’t have a procedure, and everybody is rushing, jumping over the fence as happened the last time that is a recipe for chaos. And where you have a lot of party supporters who are going to be there, that’s a recipe for disaster,” Hughes warned.
The AFC Leader said in the absence of information on the procedure from GECOM, a number of representatives from various political parties have been camping out at Umana Yana.
The APNU was first in line, with the AFC stating that it is second in line.

“Imagine thousands of persons there in the morning, especially with the APNU and the PPP’s contingents literally next to each other in Young Street and Main Street, and if there is no procedure, you are going to have a mad rush towards the Umana Yana. Now, the police have barricades but if you don’t have the procedure and those barricades are breached, it’s chaos. So, I think GECOM owes this country, particularly the competitors in this election the responsibility today, to specifically publish what the procedure is,” Hughes said.
Hughes said already representatives from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) have showed up at the Umana Yana, claiming that their party was second in line.
Hughes said GECOM should not wait until the final hour to disclose the procedure to guide the process.
There are more than 20 parties hoping to contest the elections in September.
