Alexander to consult lawyer after Jagdeo accuses him of electoral fraud

Government nominated Commissioner at the Guyana Elections Commission, Vincent Alexander has indicated that he has made moves to consult his Attorneys over accusations leveled against him by PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo.

At a Wednesday press conference, Mr. Jagdeo lumped Alexander among several persons he accused of being involved in electoral fraud and rigging.

Alexander told reporters today that he was taken aback by the accusations against him since he is part of an Elections Commission that has been making decisions and putting out orders as a collective body.

He said it is clear the PPP General Secretary is trying to use him to make “cheap political points” and he will address them.

“How can one singularly accuse Alexander when in fact collectively the Commission has embraced the order, so far as it has put it into a legal document, recognizing its existence,” Mr. Alexander said.

He further stated that it is impossible for a Commissioner to be involved in electoral fraud since the decisions coming out of GECOM do not come from or are made by any single Commissioner.

Alexander said his reputation has been tested for the many years that he has been in public life.

According to Alexander, “I have a reputation that stands scrutiny; a reputation which has been tested even by those people who are now trying to drag me through the mud”.

The PPP General Secretary and several of his party members have been accusing a number of GECOM officials and staff members of electoral fraud and rigging.

The claims started even before the first vote was cast in the 2020 elections.
