Routine COVID-19 testing for Palms residents and staff following confirmed cases

A decision has been made for all staff members and residents of the Palms Geriatric home to undergo regular screening and testing for the coronavirus disease.

The decision comes on the heels of confirmation that four of the recent new cases of the coronavirus are residents of the home.

Those four cases are in addition to another confirmed case that was recorded two weeks ago after a resident passed away.

Director of Services at the Ministry of Social Protection, Whenworth Tanner told News Source today that the situation is worrying.

He said staff members tested so far are all negative so it is likely that the infection of the first case may have come from some other source.

The Palms has been closed to visitors for more than six weeks, but there are other persons who visit the home for other purposes.

Mr. Tanner said a stricter screening system has been put in place and additional steps have been taken to safeguard the more than 190 residents.

Three of the four active cases of Palms residents are being housed in a separate facility in the institution. They are being monitored closely by medical officials. The fourth case is a patient of the Georgetown Hospital.

Guyana has recorded a total of 113 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with no new cases being recorded over the past two days.
