APNU presses GECOM to act on uncovered forgeries on PPP’s candidates lists; Police complaints filed

The Opposition, APNU is maintaining its call for the Guyana Elections Commission to address the many reported cases of forged signatures appearing on the nomination list for various PPP candidates in the upcoming elections.

At a press conference today, party officials said while the party is ready to contest the upcoming local elections, it cannot turn a blind eye to the “fraud” that its agents have unearthed in various constituencies.

The party wants the assurance from the Guyana Elections Commission that the matter will be addressed.

At a press conference, Opposition Member of Parliament Amanza Walton- Desir said although the APNU continues to raise its concerns daily with GECOM, the Commission appears uninterested to investigate the claims.

“We are very unhappy with what we are hearing so far from GECOM and them saying—particularly in the public space that they can do nothing about the fraud. There seem to be some existence in GECOM some kind of disconnect because you hearing the Chairperson saying she is not aware, you hear the CEO says we know but we can’t do anything about it, so it appears to me that GECOM to get its act in order”, Walton-Desir stated.

Chief Election Officer, Vishnu Persaud is on record as saying that the Commission’s Secretariat does not have the capacity to investigate the forgery claims.

The APNU is now waiting on GECOM to act on its objections and to further take action before it decides on its next course of action.

“This matter has been brought to the attention of the Commission—we do have commissioner who sit on the Commission and so this matter is properly before them. The fact that the CEO of GECOM could say in a public space that they cannot pronounce on these allegations of fraud, means that they are aware so our commissioners have brought it and they are very well aware of it,” Walton-Desir said.

The party is also maintaining its calls for a clean voters list and for the Chairman of GECOM, Justice Claudette Singh to be removed, accusing her of being political in her decision making and not being in command of GECOM.

The APNU has made several police reports on the alleged cases of fraud.

The Opposition Leader has also written to the Acting Police Commissioner seeking an audience to get the Police to investigate the claims.
