At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today, a Baramita resident was charged and placed on $200,000 over allegation of engaging in sexually at with a 6-year-old child, some 16 years ago.
30-year-old, Vel Smith, appeared before a City Magistrate and was not required to enter a plea to the charge when it was read to him.
The charge stated that on the 28th July 2002, at Baramita, Northwest District, the then fourteen-year-old engaged in sexually activity with a child.
Immediately after the charge was read to him, bail was granted in the sum of $200,000 and he was told to return to Court on March 5th, when he will appear before Chief Magistrate, Ann Mcleannan.
According to reports the incident occurred at a shop in the community when the then teenager lureed the child to a washroom and allegedly had sexual activity with her.
It’s unclear why it took sixteen years for charges to be brought against him.
