Benn and team now urging Credit Union members not to show up at Special Meeting over several concerns

The twelve-member team led by Former Chairman of the Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union, Trevor Benn which was set to contest the Special General Meeting of the Credit Union tomorrow, is urging members not to show up or participate in the meeting owing to several developments over the weekend.

Benn and team have long accused the current Committee of Management led by Karen Vanslyutman-Corbin of flouting the September 30th Court orders of Justice Navendra Singh.

Among the orders sought and was granted is for the Special General meeting to be held no later than October 24, 2022 and that all systems used for the 2021 Annual General meeting be used during the Special General meeting.

During a press conference this afternoon, Mr. Benn and his team again accused the management committee of breaching the Court’s order. He explained that although the management Committee approached the judge asking for a variation of his orders and although the judge set November 07 to hear the application, the team is moving ahead with the Special meeting with business as usual.  Benn and team have rejected the variation application.

In a memorandum yesterday to all attorneys, the Judge made clear that if the meeting is to go ahead it must be in compliance with all orders given on September 30and that if there are breaches in those orders and the meeting goes ahead, the Judge made it clear also that there will be ‘sanctions’ against those who breach the orders.

“We are asking our members not to show up at the meeting tomorrow because of the breaches and we are confident that based on the communication from the judge, to the lawyers associated with this case that the judge is fully aware of the breaches and he is prepared to act on them at the appropriate time. In the meanwhile, we ask our members to stay away from the meeting,” Mr. Benn said during a press conference today.

Benn said his team does not want to be party to a process that has been marred by breaches of a Court’s decision.

“As it is, what they are about to embark on, does not comply with the Judge’s order so even if they call it a Special General Meeting, even if they went ahead and do what they have to do, it will not meet the requirements of the Judge and we are confident that Judge is not going to allow that to stand—whatever they do tomorrow,” Benn said.

Although the Judge ruled that the Special General Meeting must mirror last year’s Annual General meeting, Benn and team are accusing the Committee of Management of now following through on anything that was done last year.

The Judge was clear in his ruling that Trinidad Based company ROSE IT, must take charge of the online voting, instead the Committee of Management contracted a local company and made known the log in zoom credentials to members just yesterday.

Additionally, the Committee did not set up regional polling stations as was mandated and opted for one polling station at the new Central High School, The Committee also set aside a mere two hours to register more than 17,000 members to vote and to date, no agenda for the meeting has been made public, Benn complained.
