Berbice woman remanded for murder of elderly aunt

Days after she initially claimed that her 85-year-old aunt, Sumintra Sawh was stabbed and beaten to death by armed robbers, 35-year-old caretaker Roshanie Basdeo was this morning charged with her aunt’s murder.

The West Coast Berbice woman appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh and was not required to enter a plea to the charge that on Monday she murdered her aunt at the woman’s Bushlot home. The accused was her aunt’s caretaker.

The charge was filed against her after she reportedly admitted to the crime and recanted her earlier versions of the story that two men and then a neighbour had stabbed the elderly woman to death.

The accused reportedly told investigators that she inflicted injuries on herself after attacking and murdering her aunt following an argument.

The aunt had reportedly found out that she had been stealing money from her.

When the young woman arrived at Court today, she appeared despondent and kept her head down for most of the appearance and while she was leaving the Courthouse.

The murder case shocked the West Coast Berbice community. Investigators tore apart the woman’s initial story after repeatedly questioning her about her claims that there were two men that carried out the crime and later changing that to a neighbour being responsible.
