The daily midnight to 4am curfew that forms part of the national COVID-19 regulations is expected to be removed as early as this weekend, according to President Irfaan Ali.

The President made the announcement this afternoon as he attended the launching of the Guyana tourism magazine, Explore Guyana.

He explained that the Prime Minister who is the Head of the National COVID-19 Task Force is expected to put systems in place to ensure the changes to the National COVID-19 regulations.

The move is expected to be welcomed by the tourism and entertainment industries which have found themselves facing big financial losses during the pandemic, owing to the curfew measures.

With the adjustment to the measures, businesses will still be expected to ensure the other COVID-19 regulations including the need to check for proof of vaccinations and controlled crowding, are followed.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Guyana has been declining over the past two weeks, following a massive surge back in January. The number of hospitalizations and deaths has also been on the decline.
