No plan to adjust COVID curfew; But tougher enforcement coming -Pres. Ali

With a spike in new COVID-19 cases and an increase in deaths from the virus, President Irfaan Ali today said while there are no plans to adjust the national curfew, there will be tougher enforcement of the national guidelines.

There have been calls for the government to go back to the 6pm to 6am curfew from the current 10:30pm to 4 am. The President said consultation with the COVID-19 Task Force and other stakeholders has not found support for any adjustment of the curfew.

However, he stated that there will be more enforcement of the COVID regulations and guidelines with additional members of the Joint Services being placed on the ground to support the enforcement efforts.

“There will be more boots on the ground”, the President assured, as he announced the plans to tighten up on those breaking the COVID regulations.

He said the Government was hoping that persons would be responsible, but that is not the current case as more persons put themselves at risk.

The President made reference to persons still visiting the creeks and attending events in large numbers although those are prohibited by the regulations. He said the plan is to now go after the owners of the facilities where COVID breaches are found.

“The irresponsibility of some is costing us and we will have to put more resources in place to address this”, President Ali said.

He said the Government will continue to get more persons vaccinated and will seek additional vaccine shots.

According to the President, while it is not mandatory for persons to get the vaccine, he hopes persons will understand the importance of getting vaccinated at this time.

More than 125,000 persons have already been vaccinated.
