The Guyana Power and Light company has announced that it will be increasing the charges for reconnection for the new year.
In an advertisement in the daily newspapers, GPL announced that once your electricity is disconnected, you will have to clear your outstanding bill, pay a $3,200 reconnection fee and also pay an increased security deposit which will be equivalent to six times the average of your monthly electricity bill.
The company said once customers pay their bills on time, they will avoid disconnection and will ensure a brighter new year for all.
For the past few years, GPL has failed to improve its electricity supply and cut back substantially on line losses despite several promises. Additionally, the company has been receiving tax payers money to assist in its operations although it charges some of the highest electricity rates in this part of the world.
A new board was recently installed at the power company.
